Sending a safe copy of your ID
Sometimes we need a copy of your ID, for example to recover a domain. Here is how to send it safely.
For some requests we need to be sure you are the holder of a domain. For example when you recover a domain from quarantine, or when the previous provider will not hand over the transfer code. The registry, such as SIDN, then asks for a copy of your ID.
Make a safe copy
Never just send a photo of your passport or ID card. Use a safe copy:
- Cross out your citizen service number (BSN). Nobody else may use it.
- Do not cross out your photo. It is needed to recognise you.
- Add a text across it with the purpose and date, for example: Copy for Knippin ICT, domain example.nl, 4-11-2026.
The free KopieID app from the Dutch government (Android and iPhone) does this for you: take a photo, cross out details and add a watermark.
Sending it
- Via the domain: go to Services → Domains, click the domain and choose Documents. Upload the copy there. Does a statement need to be signed as well? You can do that digitally here.
- Not about a single domain? Create a ticket and we will send you a safe way to deliver the copy.
Do not send a copy of your ID by regular email. We keep the copy no longer than needed for the request.
For companies
Is the domain registered to a company? Then we also need an extract from the Chamber of Commerce (KvK) trade register, no older than 6 months. It must list the person who signs.
