WHOIS and privacy
What WHOIS shows about your domain and how your privacy is protected.
WHOIS is a public database that shows who registered a domain and when. Anyone can query it.
Viewing your domain's WHOIS
Go to Services → Domains, click the domain and, under Contact options, choose View WHOIS. You will see what the registry shows publicly.
What is visible?
What is shown depends on the extension:
| Extension | What is public? |
|---|---|
| .nl | Status, registration date, registrar, nameservers and the email addresses of the admin and technical contacts. For companies, also the company name. For private individuals, name and address are not shown. |
| .be / .eu | Status, registrar and nameservers. Personal data of private individuals is hidden. |
| .com and other international extensions | Since the GDPR, name, address and phone number are usually hidden. Often only a contact form or an anonymous email address is listed. |
Can someone request my details?
With a legitimate reason, for example trademark infringement, someone can ask the registry for the holder's details. For .nl this goes through an SIDN form. SIDN informs the holder and the admin contact.
Are the WHOIS details incorrect? Update them via Changing the holder or contact details.
