Transferring a domain to Knippin
How to move a domain from another provider to Knippin without your website or email going down.
Transferring a domain means Knippin registers and manages your domain from then on. The owner (holder) stays the same.
What you need
- The transfer code (also called auth code, EPP code or token). Request it from your current provider.
- The domain must not be locked (transfer lock). With many providers you can remove the lock yourself.
- For .com and other international extensions: the domain must have been registered for at least 60 days, and must not have been transferred or changed holder in the past 60 days.
Steps
- Request the transfer code from your current provider.
- Order the transfer using the order form. Enter your domain name, choose transfer and put the transfer code in the comments.
- We start the transfer. You will be notified once the domain is with us. It then appears in your customer panel under Services → Domains.
How long does it take?
- .nl: usually within an hour, provided the transfer code is correct.
- .be, .eu, .de and .nu: immediately, as soon as the transfer code is correct.
- .com, .net and other international extensions: up to 5 days. During that time your current provider can still refuse the transfer, for example over an unpaid bill.
Will my website and email keep working?
Yes. During a transfer we keep your current nameservers. Your website and email simply keep running. Want us to manage the DNS afterwards? See Changing nameservers.
Do not cancel your domain with your old provider before the transfer is complete. A cancelled domain can end up in quarantine, which makes moving it harder and more expensive.
Costs and expiry date
You pay the transfer rate for the extension. What happens to the expiry date depends on the extension:
- .com, .net, .org, .eu and most international extensions: one year is added to the current expiry date.
- .be and .de: the domain runs for one year from the transfer date. Any remaining time at the old provider is lost.
- .nl and .nu: the expiry date stays the same.
The rules per extension are in Comparing extensions.
Problems
| Problem | Solution |
|---|---|
| Transfer code incorrect | Request a new code from your provider and check upper and lower case. For .nl the code changes after a holder change. |
| Domain is locked | Remove the transfer lock at your current provider. |
| Provider will not give a code | A provider must hand over the code on request. If that fails, create a ticket. For .nl we can start an escalation via SIDN. This requires a copy of your ID and, for companies, a recent Chamber of Commerce extract. |
